Before heading to Miyajima, it’s worth getting off one stop early at JR Hatsukaichi Station. Around the station, there are casual restaurants, cafés, and small local shops — all easy to explore on foot.
Start with a coffee or something simple to eat near the station. You might stop by 201 Coffee Roastery for specialty beans, or try a relaxed spot like cafe bar NICO, where you can enjoy coffee or even a Guinness in an antique-filled space. Then, wander through the area and explore a mix of local flavors. You’ll find places like TEPPAN YOSHIKICHI for teppanyaki, Kushiyaki Suminoya Sakura for charcoal-grilled yakitori, TOMO Izakaya for a casual local dining experience just steps from the station, or OBANZAI LOUNGE YOUBE serving Kyoto-style home cooking.
If you’re in the mood for something bold, AKA KARA MIYAJIMAKAIDO is known for its spicy hot pot. For something uniquely local, stop by Kendama Shop Yume., a specialty shop where you can watch, try, and learn about kendama, or visit Wayo-gashi Nagao, a long-standing sweets shop offering seasonal wagashi and even edible kendama.
It’s worth stopping by the SAKURAO VISITOR CENTER to tour and taste award-winning Japanese gin and whisky. A little further out, OHISAMA PAN KOHBO is known for its fruit sandwiches, and CAFE & GALLERY KAKIO ZAKA offers Japanese home cooking in a traditional house, making both nice extra stops if you have more time.
