Japanese home cooking served in a renovated, 100-year-old, traditional, Japanese house, Café & Gallery Kakiozaka provides a comfortable intersection between old and new. Amidst tatami floors, sliding paper doors and views of the traditional, Japanese garden outside, visitors can enjoy what the owner and master chef, Chizuru Takase, calls, “home cooking with a little extra effort.” Try dishes like her Inoshishi Curry, made with wild boar meat caught in the countryside of Shimane Prefecture, or the Banzai Bento, an artfully arranged collection of six to eight small dishes made with seasonal ingredients. Takase uses local ingredients as much as possible in her cooking. And she takes the “home cooking” aspect so seriously her restaurant offers a cooking class once a month. As a former instructor at ABC Cooking Studio, one of Japan’s top cooking schools, she’s more than qualified to organize lessons. A room is also rented out as an art gallery and for events that help people learn more about traditional Japanese culture such as the koto harp, joruri puppet theater, calligraphy and the tea ceremony.
