Wayo-gashi Nagao

Run by the same family since the Meiji Period, Wayo-gashi Nagao is more than a century old — a hidden gem enjoyed by generations by Hatsukaichi families.

Nagao specializes in traditional Japanese confections as well as Japanese style Western sweets. Many of their confections change month to month, making use of seasonal ingredients. These sweets have such a strong traditional culture behind them that you can know what month it is just by looking at what’s for sale. For example, in August, visitors may find kin’gyo — literally “goldfish.” It is made with a kind of clear agar jelly. Citrusy, cool and sweet while also surprisingly delicate and filled with contrasting textures, this kind of yokan depicts goldfish swimming in a pond. A common treat in July are waka’ayu. These treats are made from a thin castella-like pancake folded over a redbean filling and decorated to look like a young sweetfish. In March, when strawberries are in season, you’ll find ichigo-daifuku. In April, when the cherry trees are in bloom, you’ll find sakura mochi. In January, sake manju is common because sake was traditionally brewed in the winter. At any time of the year, by far their most popular sweet is a kendama-shaped monaka. Created in honor of the globally famous toy first manufactured in Hatsukaichi, this edible kendama has a rice wafer shell encasing a generous amount of fillings like red bean, matcha, yuzu, and more.

Nagao is easily accessible by public transportation. Located on an old, sleepy shopping street, the glass fronted shop is a three minute walk from Hiroden-Hatsukaichi Station and a six minute walk from Hatsukaichi Station. Their prices are extremely reasonable for the beauty and quality of their products. Most items are between ¥120 and ¥400, and many of their treats are in the ¥200 to ¥350 range.
