Mention oyster barbeque to a local and they’ll likely think of Shimada Suisan, one of the leading oyster restaurants in Hiroshima Prefecture. Located an II minute walk from JR Miyajimaguchi Station, Shimada Suisan has been raising and serving high quality oysters for over 300 years. And today they do even more. They bring visitors right to the famed mollusks’ homes. For 3,000 yen, Shimada Suisan offers 40-minute tours to the sea around Miyajima. Guests can join the oyster fishermen as they venture into the sea, enjoying breathtaking views of Miyajima, the sacred island. If you leave at high tide, you will even be able to get close to Itsukushima Shrine from the sea before you
head back to the mainland. In the early morning tour with a reservation, you will have the opportunity to step on the raft-like platforms where the oysters are cultivated. You can witness the fishermen retrieving the oysters from the sea, which are suspended on long ropes.
Once there, you’ll witness how the newly harvested oysters are processed before being eaten. To top it off, guests can experience a traditional fisherman’s meal of kaki zosui, a kind of Japanese oyster congee. And if you’re hungry for more, you can always visit the restaurant and enjoy whole oysters on the grill.
