In 1966 a new kissaten opened on Miyajima. A kissaten is a traditional, Japanese coffee shop. They typically serve elegantly simple breakfast fare like sandwiches, salads, eggs and toast and mid-20th century style Japanese treats like green, melon-flavored cream sodas. You won’t find a Starbucks-like variety of caffeinated beverages here, but you will find a rich and robust drink prepared in a siphon coffee brewer, a device that looks like something from a highschool chemistry lab. Kissa Shima, provides much more than these, however. They also offer a variety of handmade pastries like tarts, eclairs, apple pie and seasonal cakes. They recommend their lemon cakes made with honey from the island and lemons from the islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
