Wood is a versatile and beautiful material; however, it takes a lot of skill to create ordinary household items that double as art. Toshiro-san, the man behind the handcrafted wooden bowls, plates, cups and cutlery at Kinouta, has that skill. His understanding of wood and his execution of simplicity makes his work stand out. Interesting wood grains run against simple forms in unexpected ways, giving credence to his shop’s name which translates to, “poetry in wood.” His products are light, durable and comfortable in your hands. In a marketplace that favors cheap plastics and imports, Toshiro-san tries his best to set reasonable prices knowing these items are for daily use. He is extremely accommodating too. If you don’t like what you see in his shop, you can make a custom order. You can even give him the wood you want him to work with. He encourages customers to supply him with wood recycled from demolished houses and beloved garden trees.
