It’s easy to spot Momiji No Ki walking to the ferry terminal from JR Miyajima Station. You can recognize it by the traditional, green noren curtain outside the door and emblazoned with the word’s “Anago Meshi” — their signature dish. Fresh anago, conger eel in English, is bought new every morning, then later seasoned, grilled and served over rice. The menu also features assorted sashimi, tempura, oysters farmed in the waters off Hatsukaichi, and deep fried dishes that go well with their selection of alcohols from across Hiroshima Prefecture like Misen, a Hatsukaichi sake, and Kamotsuru, a sake from Saijo. From 5 p.m. the second floor of the shop becomes an izakaya, a Japanese style tavern that specializes in food that pairs with alcohol. Momiji No Ki’s izakaya has booths with sliding paper doors, so you can relax and enjoy the evening privately with your friends.
