Whatever the season, Megahira Ski Resort and Onsen in Yoshiwa village has something for families to enjoy. Indulge in the skin purifying, alkaline waters of hot spring baths throughout the year. Relax under Japanese maples in their big outdoor bath or steam indoors in baths made of natural rocks. Their baths are said to aid people with a variety of maladies including fatigue, neuralgia, and hypertension. The Japanese typically bathe fully nude, so there are separate baths for men and women.

For dinner, experience the hyper local flavors of the Restaurant Megahira. In keeping with the Japanese love of the seasons, the menu adapts to seasonal ingredients and uses local produce including seafood directly from fishing port, rice they grow themselves, Yoshiwa wasabi, and Maitake mushrooms, a species that grows wild in the area and are cultivated by the resort. You can even tour their mushroom farm!

In winter, Megahira Mountain is known for its wide runs and moderate slopes suitable for beginner and intermediate skiers. There is a dedicated sledding hill and a 200 meter long Family Course that is serviced by its own lift. The resort’s Forest Course is also gentle enough for amateurs to explore. For those seeking a challenge, more experienced skiers can try one of the six other courses down the 1,082.5 meter high mountain with slopes up to 30 degrees and a maximum course length of 2,300 meters.

And in the off season, explore the vast art collection of the Woodone Museum. Closed during the winter but open the rest of the year, it features a permanent exhibit of amazingly intricate Meissen porcelain, art nouveau glass works, and Satsuma ware from the end of the Edo and Meiji periods. It also has a changing exhibit that has displayed the works of notable artists like Utagawa Hiroshige, whose prolific work influenced giants like Paul Gauguin and Frank Lloyd Wright.
